Dear Writer,
I am writing you a post about absolutely nothing.
You’re welcome.
We are surrounded by so many people shouting into the void, looking for attention and trying to sell various wares and provide endless uninformed opinions about things they understand only on the most basic of levels and it’s too damn much.
We weren't meant to think this damn much about everything all of the time.
We were meant to laugh and love and enjoy our people and occasionally, when the time was right and the moment was necessary, think about one thing.
Maybe.
Occasionally.
Now, don’t take my criticism as any kind of claim that I am not one of these people shouting into the void; I absolutely am. As a matter of fact, here are my various wares:
But, now that that ugliness is taken care of, let’s just take a minute to think about… nothing.
Like, seriously. Right now. I want you to contemplate… nothing.
Silence.
Void.
Just for a moment.
Just… right now.
…
…
…
How did that feel? To have nothing right there at your fingertips, within reach.
I felt relief.
Here’s the thing… I like thinking about things. I like thinking thoughts and investigating ideas and making jokes. These are all things I enjoy.
But when the internet went from Hey, That’s Interesting to A Little Bit of Everything All of The Time (don’t click that link… not now; later) it got overwhelming.
It’s too much.
It’s too damn much and it’s all of the time.
Take a moment now, a breath, here where it’s just you, me, and absolutely nothing, and take a breath.
Look at these letters on this screen and read the words they form very, very slowly. Instead of rushing to cram as many letters into your brain as possible as quickly as possible… slow down.
Read.
One.
Word.
At.
A.
Time.
And then read this word…
… nothing.
Read it again.
Nothing.
Silence.
Void.
Nothing.
And now, as slowly as you can, read this:
There is nothing that you need to do right now that cannot wait a moment for you to do nothing.
You do not need to earn your space in this world by doing anything right now.
I mean… right now, your body is taking up space and all you need to do to earn that space is exist, which you have already done, without even really trying. You woke up this morning already existing.
And now, use your superpower—your existing—to create a bubble around you that is full of nothing.
Imagine it now… a forcefield around you that is slowly expanding and creating more nothing around you.
More silence.
More void.
This is you. This is your space. And you can return to it any time you need to. You can be and do and think and see and hear nothing whenever you want to. You do not have to earn your nothing. It already belongs to you.
And your nothing is right here, whenever you need it.

I actually felt the nerves at the base of my skull relax while reading this. I’m going to read it again and then close my eyes, set down my phone, and breathe. I don’t do it enough. I’m always on. Always alert. Thank you for the reminder ❤️
This is so true and so what I have been feeling for a while now. I wrote a thing the other day about how I have noticed my self being addicted to googling - anything that comes into my head, I wonder about it and then google it to find out the answer. But...we didn't used to be able to do that. We had to just not know and go on with our day! So, not only are we bombarded with everyone else's ideas, opinions and advice on a minute by minute basis, but we are (well, I am) bombarding my own head with answer to questions and issues that frankly do not really matter. My brain cannot hold all of this! So yes. Let's all just calm down and enjoy N O T H I N G. After all, that's where creativity comes from...
