Great post! It pairs very well with an "antiproductivity" book I'm reading right now called "Four Thousand Weeks" by Oliver Burkeman. It talks about concepts like finitude and the idea that "we are time," but it's super approachable. I highly recommend it.
PS Lani, you mentioned wanting more Buffy. Have you read the comics? I'd seen some of Buffy (and none of Angel) before starting the comics, but those Dark Horse comics are made me go back and fall in love with the show properly. There's about five "seasons" in continuity with the show, and they're all really good. My only disappointment was learning to really appreciate Faith from the comics, then to find out she doesn't get nearly enough screen time in either show.
I have read a lot of the comics, but it was a while ago. I remember liking them more after S8, which felt a little rough to me. I do want to read them again, though! Glad to have the recommendation!
Huge Angel fan here. Far superior to Buffy, to my mind (I said what I said). And I remember that line so well. Sitting on the steps out the back of the hotel. And how My thoughts went,”Wow, that’s deep...except...hang on...it makes no sense.” I’ve tried far too many times (for an actual grown woman to be trying to rationalise a tv vampire show) to make it make sense. Can’t do it. But yes! Joy! And that Prof Brian Cox bit about how can we want MORE when we get to be conscious and aware in the universe? That always just makes me stop and breathe and feel so damn happy that I got to be alive. Thanks for reminding me this morning.
Awww, this is awesome, and you are not alone in your opinion about Angel vs. Buffy. I think most people like Buffy more, or come to Angel from Buffy and so have expectations that get dashed, but I think that Angel's highs are higher... but the lows are way lower. :) Glad you enjoyed the post, going to check out the link!
First came across that concept in one of the early Stainless Steel Rat stories by Harrison, though not as succinctly or without the cool rhyme...
