My husband has never met a kitchen item he could say no to. His mom got him a peanut butter maker (WHY?! JUST BUY A JAR AT THE STORE!) and it sits sadly alongside the waffle irons (yes, more than one), rusty wok, air fryer, two espresso makers, and who knows what else.
But this got me thinking that I should take inventory of the kitchen to see what nonsense really does reside deep in the cabinets.
Now I know that it's not just me and Joseph who have this problem! Except I'm the one who's constantly wanting new gadgets and he's the one bringing logic into it to try and clear the clutter. This was a delightful read, Lani. I've missed your corner of the internet.
Reading this gave me joy. Having your writing voice in my head again made me smile and made me laugh. As to the gadget issue….while I don’t have doubles, I have a lot of gadgets. And in truth, I do have some that have been used only once a year. But let me tell you, the one time a year they see the light of day, they are glorious and I revel in their glory and usefulness 😊😊😊
I love it. So typical for my own relationship to technology and convincing my wife why we will starve if we don't get this thing.
“The problem isn’t the Instant Pot,” I said. “It’s us. We are not the kind of people who should have kitchen gadgets. We hate cooking, and there isn’t a gadget in the world that is going to fix that. As we have proven. Over and over and over again. Remember the juicers. It’s like remember the Alamo, only less racist and more accurate to our actual situation.”
My late mother was an excellent cook and collected kitchen gadgets. Guess who inherited them all? I am overwhelmed with so much more than I will use or have room for, but sorting it all out is harder than ignoring it.
I think a weekly trip to a good bakery would be a more reasonable idea. 400-sq ft apartment here with too little cabinet space and way too many cooking tools. But I like to cook.
Yeah...we did the whole kitchen, and house, actually clean out when we moved 3.5 years ago. During covid, we added an instant pot and an air fryer to the new kitchen. Used the damn air fryer only to make toast and it made crappy toast. Sold the air fryer this summer for $35 to a lake pal and I use the instant pot for pork chops. I will say I love, love my Keurig Duo and use it every day, sometimes more than once. Be strong and actually, send me some bread... ;-)
The Lovecraft imagery is perfect.

Wow, I did not know peanut butter makers existed.
It’s a hunk of junk and 800 little plastic pieces that need to be washed individually.
